MODEL “KINGLIGHT 200” WEIGHING 11.9kgs
BY 3D TENDER COM - £275
Bought new in late 2019 (costing over £550) but used only a few times due to Covid. In “very-nearly-new” condition and with no leaks, patches or repairs. Offered for sale at a realistic half price.
This dinghy was purchased for my young granddaughter to use as an independent tender when cruising, and for an expedition to explore deep into Pipers Hole on Tresco. The former now wants a fast RIB with room for her mates (some hopes), and the latter has suffered roof collapse, so this super little dinghy has to go!
Produced by French company 3DTender.com using German Mehler lightweight fabric reinforced PVC material (but actually made in China), it has an inflatable air-deck contributing to general stiffness of the boat and keeping feet dry. The huge advantage of this dinghy is its ultra-light weight; under 12kg so great for single handers to lug around (especially those “of an age”). Its compact size also makes it convenient to pack away in a very small cruiser. On the other hand, it isn’t as robust as a traditional Avon hypalon dinghy, so a bit of care is advisable when beaching or when alongside stone jetties etc. But, as it is so light, one person can easily lift it to avoid dragging it and causing chafe. It comes with a backpack so can be carried (deflated) over longer distances for access to remote beaches (or even caves!).
Realistically it is suitable for use only in sheltered waters with one adult and a child, or two teenagers. We used it in the Yealm, Fowey and Helford and it was fine but an open anchorage in a force 6 would be a different matter. It rows well (for an inflatable) and with our trusty old Yamaha 2hp outboard motor whizzes along nicely.
The model is now known as the “Superlight Twin Air TWA200” (identical to the “KingLight 200”).
A slight downside is that the dinghy is marked with my yacht’s name along the rubbing strake at the bow! I’ve tried to remove this but with only limited success as the marking is stubbornly indelible to meet insurer’s requirements. However it will be easy enough to paint over the name or apply one’s own name over it using vinyl lettering. The dinghy comes with aluminium oars, adjustable aluminium seat, repair kit, pump and backpack. For more details of the boat and for a download of the manual have a look at:
